Comprehensive Eye Exam

Visiting your eye doctor and having a comprehensive eye exam is one of the most important things you can do for your overall health. Everyone can benefit from regular eye exams, even if you think your vision is fine.

At Prairie Vista Eye & Optical in Liberal, we offer comprehensive eye exams for patients of all ages to ensure optimal eye health and clear vision for years to come! Our comprehensive eye exams include a thorough evaluation of your visual acuity, refractive error, eye movements, and ocular health. We use state-of-the-art technology and techniques to detect issues early when treatment is most effective.

What should you expect during a comprehensive eye exam?

During your exam, our optometrist will ask you about any vision problems you may be experiencing, as well as any medical conditions that could affect your eyes. We will also review your medical history and any medications you are taking.

A comprehensive eye exam goes well beyond checking your vision. Using the latest diagnostic technology, we can spot early signs of eye diseases and other medical conditions, often before you have symptoms.

While tests will vary depending on each patient’s eye health and risk factors, comprehensive eye exams generally include the following:

  • Assessment of visual acuity (the sharpness of your vision) and determining your correct eyeglass prescription.
  • Eye pressure measurement to help screen for glaucoma.
  • Visual field test to determine if you have blind spots or peripheral vision issues.
  • Cover test to identify crossed eyes or binocular vision problems.
  • Slit lamp exam to detect diseases and conditions affecting the front of the eye.
  • Dilated eye exam to monitor the health of the retina and optic nerve.

A comprehensive eye exam usually takes about an hour to complete. All the tests in a comprehensive eye exam are painless, and our doctor will clearly explain each test before performing them.

What are the benefits of a comprehensive eye exam?

Comprehensive eye exams can detect eye diseases such as glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration in their early stages. Early detection is essential for effective treatment and can prevent irreversible vision loss. During your eye exam, you will receive immediate feedback about your eye health. Our eye doctor will test for a range of issues, including:

  • Nearsightedness
  • Farsightedness
  • Astigmatism
  • Focusing problems
  • Other vision problems
  • Eye diseases

Depending on the results, they can prescribe eyeglasses or contact lenses if necessary and provide helpful information about your vision and eye health. If our doctor finds any issues during the exam, they will work with you to develop a treatment plan customized to your specific needs.

One of the most important benefits of a comprehensive eye exam is that it can help detect health conditions early. Many diseases, such as diabetes and high blood pressure, can show symptoms in the eyes before you would experience any other symptoms. This means that you can get treatment earlier and improve your chances of managing the disease effectively.

One of the diagnostic technologies we use at Prairie Vista Eye & Optical during a comprehensive eye exam is the Optomap®. The Optomap® is a revolutionary system that captures roughly 80% of the retina in one panoramic image using ultra-wide digital retinal imaging. The entire process takes a matter of minutes, and the best part is Optomap®’s ability to store a digital image! In many cases, our optometrist can spot early signs of eye diseases using the data collected from the saved images and send a screenshot to colleagues for a second opinion. The procedure is completely safe and recommended for children since vision problems can begin at an early age.

Dr Farrar and staff were professional in every sense of the word. I knew I had a cataract on my right eye that would require surgery within the next three to five years prescribed to me by my previous doctor. My previous doctor still updated my contacts like they were helping. Dr Farrar assured me that no contact would make my right eye perfect til surgery on it. It’s funny how I had already quit wearing the contact for my right eye due to it only making my site worse. Not only did Dr Farrar not order more contacts for my right eye til after surgery but it’s saving me extra money for something that wouldn’t help. I’m set up to getting my right eye worked on and not having to possibly having to wearing any contacts. I 100% recommend Prairie Vista Optometry in Liberal, Kansas. They are my forever eye care from now on
